Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Virus

Has anybody ever looked at the Corona virus from the perspective of the virus? Crazy? Maybe. On the other hand, all beings have evolved to survive and thrive. Those that hurt or kill don’t do it out of spite, but in an attempt to survive.

This virus is no different. In fact, many are benign, and don’t harm humans or other hosts at all. Not only that, but our very DNA, the heart of what we think it means to be human, is nearly 8% virus DNA! Most of our own cells aren’t even human either.

What does this mean? That viruses and bacteria and humans have evolved together for a very long time, and many have learned how to live in harmony with us, without killing or even harming us in any way.

Some even help. e.g. boost our immune system, or digest certain nutrients for us.

If the Corona virus is new, which seems to be the case, it’s probably going to become less harmful. As it wants to survive, killing its host isn’t such a good idea.

Even now, less than 5% of people infected end up dying. As usual, it’s the sick and old that are most at risk, those with compromised immune systems.

So one simple defense is the usual: look after ourselves! Eat well, rest well, get regular exercise, avoid pollution, deal with stress whenever it shows up, etc.

Here’s another more radical idea: love the virus. We all know that stress kills. As a wise being once said:

Fear is the path to the dark side. Fear leads to anger.
Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering.

Yoda, from Star Wars

What if we decide to love the Corona virus? How different would we feel? Peace and love lead to an improved immune system. Love heals. Why can’t we live together in harmony, as humans do with countless other viruses and bacteria?

Yes, I know it’s a crazy idea. But hey, it might just work!

We can still take good care of ourselves, wash our hands regularly, and avoid visiting China. But let’s not give in to panic.

What do we have to lose, except our fear?
