What’s our natural diet?

If people are saying that all of these different diets are great, how can they all be right? How can we figure that out? I used to be very confused about it. But no longer. It’s helpful to look at what humans evolved to eat over countless millennia through our evolutionary journey.

We started out eating plants, like most primates. They are largely sugars and carbohydrates, not much fat or protein. Then we added meat, flesh, seafood, and eggs, all concentrated sources of protein and healthy fat.

Sure, you can get them from plants, but you have to eat more plants.

Gradually, humans started eating as many animal products as they could get, but always included plant foods in our diet as well. Mainly because it wasn’t easy to find so many animal products to eat!

If we look at what most people ate a few centuries ago, we find the same thing: as many animal products as possible, and the rest was plant foods.

So that’s a great start for most people! And make sure your food is as natural as possible. i.e. not processed. Cooking is fine, but don’t use processed oils like canola or seed oil. They’re not healthy, and they get worse when you cook them. Stick to butter, coconut oil, or animal fats.

Fast food really is as bad as they say. Actually worse. So are most things that come in a packet, and last forever. e.g. sweet biscuits, soft drinks, potato chips, cakes, and most baked goods.

It turns out some folks DO thrive on a purely vegan diet. i.e. no animal products at all. But very few. Hardly any as a percentage of the population. I know, I tried it, and didn’t do well at all.

Some can also do well being pure carnivores. But I don’t recommend it generally. There’s hardly any fibre, and finding certain vitamins isn’t easy. Nor is finding top quality animal products cheaply. e.g. free range eggs, grass fed meat, and wild caught seafood. Don’t go near farmed seafood for any reason!

Summary? Start as an omnivore, eat as high quality food as you can (organic, biodynamic, free range, grass fed, etc), and see how you go. If you want to eat more or less animal products, do try, and see how you go. But if your health goes downhill, return to the omnivore’s diet.

Again: as pure and high quality as you can! Otherwise you overdose on poisons, hormones, and other unhealthy chemicals that are added to increase profits, but reduce health.

As well as making you fat and sick, they ruin your immune system, so you’ll far more likely to catch every disease that shows up. It might taste nice in the moment, but it really isn’t worth it.
